Results of a key competency measure—reading tests for fourth grade students ─ are similar within the Making Connections area and the rest of Milwaukee Public Schools. But the differences among schools within the Making Connections area are striking.  In 2004-05 only 35% of 4^th grade students at Thirty-Eighth Street school tested “proficient” or higher, compared to 82% of 4^th grade students at Thirty-Seventh Street school.  The overall “proficient” or higher result for Making Connections district schools was 55% compared to 81% state-wide.
