’s Public Schools face a fiscal crisis and have a poor achievement record. But the quality of individual schools varies substantially. Some of the best and worst of public schools are found in the Making Connections neighborhood.
In the absence of kindergarten assessment of school readiness for children, the retention rates in first grade may be instructive. This number varies substantially by school and may reflect different administrative policies within schools. In the 2003-04 school year, 7.3% of 1st grade students in Making Connections district schools were retained, compared to 1.4% of 1st grade students state-wide.
