Many more African Americans than whites are arrested for drug-related crimes.  In the Making Connections area, greater than 35% of the charges against those returning were for drug offenses.

A felony record is a major barrier to employment.  A controlled research study conducted by Northwestern University found that employers were much more likely to ignore resumes submitted by those with felonies.  (But the influence of race in hiring decisions was also very strong.)
