Income varies by race.  Although the median income of all Milwaukee County households was $47,175 in 2000, African-American households in the Making Connections area earned a median income of $18,700.

Poverty limits choice.  59% of Making Connections household have access to credit, compared to 92% for Milwaukee County

Making Connections residents are less likely to have savings accounts – 46% compared to 71% for the county and are less likely to have a bank account – 62% compared to 91% for the county.  Debt levels are high and credit repair is recognized as a high priority for the Asset Building strategy.   Many of these issues were explored in the Making Connections Community survey.  Relevant highlights are summarized in the table on the next page.
